GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested three men, including a foreigner, and confiscated various types of fireworks worth RM408,943 and drugs in Batu Maung near here on Thursday.
Penang police chief Shuhaily Zain said that acting on a tip-off, the police stopped a van with three men at about 11pm in Batu Maung.
“Following a search in the vehicle, police found a packet containing 6.4g of ketamine and 18 Erimin 5 pills, all valued at RM2,700, and also 81 boxes containing 527 different types of fireworks.
“Following the arrest of the three men, aged between 26 and 45, police then raided a place in the Batu Maung area a few hours later and found 44 sacks containing 333 boxes of fireworks,” he said.
Shuhaily said the 860 boxes of fireworks were believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country for the Chinese New Year celebrations.
He said two of the suspects tested positive for drugs.
Shuhaily said police also seized 840.7kg of ganja worth RM2.1 million in a series of raids in Penang and Perak on Thursday. A total of seven men were detained. - FMT
