Hannah Yeoh pays tribute to dear friend late PAS leader Rani

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has paid tribute to former Selangor PAS commissioner, the late Dr Abd Rani Osman, who passed away yesterday.

Despite being on opposite ends of the political spectrum, she said Rani was a dear friend and a “hamba Allah yang baik” (a good servant of God).

"He will be missed so dearly. Politically we are opponents but Rani was first and foremost a dear friend. And I will remember him that way.

"You lived the high calling of public service so well. Loss of positions did not deter you from serving the people of Meru.

"Everything in me concurs with that last prayer said about this man's life - 'this is a hamba Allah yang baik'. Yes and amen. I love you Rani and thank you for touching my life," she said in a Facebook post last night.

Rani was the Meru assemblyperson from 2008 to 2018, and was Selangor PAS commissioner from 2011 to 2013.

During Yeoh's tenure as Selangor state assembly speaker, she and Rani also served together on the Special Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) which the former chaired.

At the time PAS and DAP were still allies under Pakatan Rakyat, until the Islamist party parted ways in 2015.

Elaborating on her friendship with Rani, Yeoh said that whenever she was attacked over her Christian faith, the PAS leader would assure her not to worry.

"When my daughter was born and dedicated in church, Rani attended the simple ceremony.

"When the (2011) Damansara Utama Methodist Church raid happened, he led a delegation of Muslim politicians to dialogue with the church. He showed me how to do life with people of other faiths," she added.

Yeoh said her last meeting with Rani was when they had a meal together sometime in September last year, where she described it as a reunion with family.

She said Rani had also checked in on her during the 15th general election when her campaign billboards in Segambut were vandalised.

Rani passed away yesterday at the age of 65.
