SEPANG: The government will not reintroduce the blanket face mask mandate in public places anytime soon.
Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa, during a visit to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) said the Health Ministry would maintain the existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to mask-wearing regulation as part of preventive measures against Covid-19.
At present, she said people travelling via public transport must wear face masks except for those travelling by air.
"People visiting healthcare facilities must also wear facemasks.
"This means, the mask mandate still exists," she told reporters today.
Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to continue wearing mask in public places, especially in confined spaces.
Many Malaysians have urged the government to reimpose stringent SOPs in light of the spike in Covid-19 cases in China.
New Straits Times reported some quarters urging the government to tighten restrictions including reintroducing the mask mandate.
Also present at the event were deputy minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni and deputy director-general (Public Health) Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli. - NST
