Lodge reports with EC, MACC on cash handouts, says Ahmad

Ahmad Maslan said these payments were allegedly made just days before polling day.

PETALING JAYA: Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has asked Terengganu Umno to file reports with the Election Commission and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on alleged distribution of cash handouts to voters during the 15th general election (GE15).

Ahmad said the alleged acts amounted to criminal offences which needed to be referred to both agencies so that they could probe the allegations.

The Pontian MP also shared that Terengganu Umno told him several individuals allegedly gave out RM150 to youths, RM300 to university students and RM600 to retirees and the disabled.

“The problem is these payments were made just days before the polling day.”

Ahmad said if it was just ordinary aid, given when it was not the election campaign period, then it could be considered as the state government’s aid to the rakyat.

“But when such aid is given during the campaign period, it is not right,” he said in a Berita Harian report.

“I hope Terengganu Umno will not only file petitions in court but also refer this matter to the EC and MACC,” he said after visiting Pontian MCA leaders during their Chinese New Year celebration in Pulau Sebatang, Pontian.

Earlier this week, Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said told reporters that the party had filed petitions to challenge the results in the constituencies of Kuala Terengganu, Marang, and Kemaman.

He noted that PN gave out money in the form of i-Siswa, i-Belia and i-Pencen to voters in Terengganu on Nov 15, 16 and 17. The money was also given to those who had returned home to vote.

Ahmad said what allegedly transpired during the contests in those three parliamentary constituencies mirrored what had happened in Cameron Highlands during the 14th general election.

A by-election had to be called in 2019 after an election court annulled BN’s victory in the Cameron Highlands constituency in GE14 after ruling that there was vote-buying during the election campaign. - FMT
