Masks to be mandatory in Melaka if Covid-19 cases rise

Two Covid-19 variants, BA.5.2 and BF.7, had been identified in the country.

PETALING JAYA: The Melaka state government will reintroduce the mask mandate in public spaces as well as in closed and crowded areas if there is an increase in Covid-19 cases.

State health and anti-drug committee chairman Dr Akmal Saleh said that the state health department would be monitoring the infections for the next two weeks before deciding on the matter, Sinar Harian reported.

“Of course, Melaka takes note about the increasing number of cases. We will not hesitate to reintroduce the mask mandate in closed spaces and public areas,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.

He also recommended members of the public to get their booster shots to curb the spread of the virus.

Yesterday, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that two Covid-19 variants that were responsible for around 80% of infection cases in China – BA.5.2 and BF.7 – had been identified in the country.

As of Dec 31, there were 4,148 cases involving the BA.5.2 variant, and three cases of the BF.7 variant, said Noor Hisham. - FMT
