Michelle Yeoh becomes first Malaysian actor nominated for Oscar

Michelle Yeoh has received her first Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress for her role as Evelyn Quan in the hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Ipoh-born 61-year-old will be the first Malaysian actor to be nominated for an Oscar.

Previously, in 2020, two Malaysian-born producers based in the US had their short film St Louis Superman nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced today, with the winners to be unveiled on March 12 (March 13 beginning 8am in Malaysia) at a star-studded event that will be aired live from Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

In her Oscar-nominated role, Yeoh plays a Chinese-American immigrant who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.

Her performance has already bagged Yeoh the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award at the Golden Globes and she is also nominated for the 2023 EE Bafta Film Awards.

Yeoh received her first Bafta Leading Actress nomination for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Her more recent works included the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Last Christmas (2019), and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

She is set to appear in the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese and the eight-part series The Brothers Sun on Netflix.
