No water disruption despite polluted rivers - Selangor rep

The quick response by the authorities ensured there was no water disruption despite a fire and diesel spill incidents recently, said Selangor state executive councillor Hee Loy Sian.

The fire occurred at a plastic factory in Semenyih while the diesel spill was at the Slim River in Perak, he said.

Hee said immediate action by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) along with other government agencies managed to contain the pollution at Sungai Bernam and Sungai Langat, caused by the two separate incidents.

Because of this, he said, operations at the Bernam River Headworks (BRH) and Semenyih water treatment plants were unaffected.

“Luas activated Code Yellow based on the Water Source Pollution Emergency Manual (incidents that have the potential to cause the water treatment plants to stop working) for a thorough investigation to be conducted at both areas that are at risk,” he said in a statement.

Regarding the fire incident at a plastic factory along Jalan Perindustrian Mahkota Utama in Beranang that went viral on social media yesterday, Hee (above) said Luas found industrial manufacturing materials and products flowing into the area’s drainage system in the form of a black oily liquid.

“A total of 13 bags of activated carbon were used to prevent the odour from entering Sungai Kabul.

“As soon as the extinguishing operation was completed at 2.30am, Luas continued to carry out suction work until 3.30am.

“Continuous monitoring and sampling by Luas at a frequency of every 30 minutes along several spots until 7am on this morning found no traces of visible burnt materials or odour from the fire.”

Diesel spill outside Selangor

Meanwhile, on a separate incident in Perak, where a diesel spill occurred at 5.24pm yesterday at Slim River, he said the flow of the river has the potential to affect the operation of the BRH water treatment plant.

Based on checks, he said this is because the location of the plant is 21km from the site of the spill.

“Luas carried out monitoring and sampling works at a frequency of every one hour using portable UV analysers from 7pm last night up until 4.30am this morning.

“There are no traces or odour in Sungai Bernam which is the main source of water supply to the BRH water treatment plant.

“No traces or diesel residue or odour was found after it’s believed the residue has dissolved in the river.

“However, Luas and related agencies are proactive and will continue to carry out follow-up monitoring following this pollution incident that has the potential to reoccur given the location of the cause is outside Selangor.”

In related news, Hee also called on the public to be more aware and concerned about the protection of water resources and to not use rivers and waterways to discharge or dump effluents. - Mkini
