PAS man defends Hadi's 'charity' move, says Zahid's the one with graft charges

A PAS leader has defended the culture of "charity" within the party against claims that it was tantamount to corruption when given out to voters during an election.

Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria took a swipe at Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's attack against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, pointing out how the former is the one still facing multiple corruption charges in court.

"Likening PAS’ promotion of the 'infaq' culture or charity to corruption as faced by the Umno leader (Zahid) is a sign of confusion that threatens the country.

"What more when what was stressed by the PAS president are donations or handouts given to the public, even during election campaigns," he said in a statement yesterday.

Razman (above) noted how many PAS-linked establishments since the party was founded were built on public donations, aside from assets bought for its services, earning the party its “tin Milo” moniker in reference to the empty cans often used to collect money.

Previously, Hadi defended the party’s distribution of cash to voters during GE15, claiming that it was a charitable act and hence, not prohibited by electoral law.

The Marang MP added that existing rules only prohibited contesting candidates and their representatives from giving cash to voters.

This earned him rebuke from various Umno leaders, while Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim last night also called out the act as being a form of corruption rather than charity. - Mkini
