A police inspector claimed trial at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court today for a count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving a 16-year-old girl last Wednesday.
Mohd Maliki Azmi, 35, who was attached to the Yan district police headquarters in Kedah, appeared calm when the charges were read to him before judge Roslan Hamid, reported New Straits Times.
He is accused to have committed the offences at about 6.30pm on Dec 28 last year in a criminal investigations room at the Yan district police headquarters.
For the charge under Section 376(2)(f) of the Penal Code (Act 574), Maliki faces up to 20 years in prison and whipping, upon conviction.
In addition, the accused was also slapped with three separate charges under the Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 (Act 792) for committing sexual assault on the same victim.
These include touching the victim's private part, inserting an object into her private part, and forcing the victim to undress and show her body with sexual intention, at the same time and location.
He faces up to 20 years behind bars and whipping for each individual charge.
Deputy public prosecutor Hizween Azleena Othman Kamal urged the court to set RM20,000 bail for the rape charge and RM15,000 for the sexual assault charges.
She also urged the court to order the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month and surrender his travel documents to the court pending trial.
Maliki, who was not represented, pleaded for a lower bail amount, saying he had lost his income and had a wife and parents to support.
The court then set RM10,000 bail for the rape charge and RM15,000 for the sexual assault charges, and set Feb 6 for mention.
The victim had reportedly gone to meet the officer to have her statement recorded over claims of rape by her stepfather when the cop himself allegedly raped her. - Mkini
