Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob opined that the decision to leave the party’s top two positions uncontested can also be determined by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
While the party tabled and passed a motion to that effect during the recent Umno general assembly, the former prime minister said there are party members who think the decision could have been made in a different manner.
Speaking to the media after the conclusion of the Umno general assembly today, he said any party member can refer the matter to the ROS to get confirmation regarding the status of the motion.
“In terms of legislation, there are several different views, some say it’s okay because it is decided during the general assembly because it is the highest decision-making platform in the party to make any decisions.
“This is because that view is allowed by the chairperson.
“There are also different views that say in terms of this general assembly, although it is the highest decision-making platform in the party and can make any decisions, it must be subjected to the party’s constitution,” Ismail Sabri (above) said at a press conference at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur this evening.
Asked if he would take the matter to the ROS or send a notice of objection, Ismail Sabri said he would not, explaining he was merely stating two different views.
“Anyone – party members, party stakeholders, anyone – can get views from ROS,” he added.
Umno delegates today voted in favour of the motion not to contest the president and deputy president posts in its upcoming party polls this year.
Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin also confirmed the additional motion, proposed by a Negeri Sembilan delegate yesterday, was passed after a majority of delegates voted in favour of it.
He said the vote was conducted through a show of hands and delegates standing to express support.
Another Umno leader in the party’s supreme council who wished not to be named told Malaysiakini the motion was passed with huge support from delegates.
Ismail Sabri, who is also the Bera MP, said Clause 8.1 of the Umno constitution stipulates that the general assembly has the highest authority in the party to determine the course of the party, but is subject to the party constitution.
“In the constitution, in terms of choosing positions, it must be done via election, once every three years,” he said.
Warning against ‘no contest’ decision
Meanwhile, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah believed restricting the top positions from being contested will scare the youth from joining the party.
He said he was confident there would not be any split within the party if the elections were held.
“This scares young people. Young people won’t join. We want to make Umno young, we have to bring in young people.
“And young people must bring as many as they can with them, this only happens if there is (competition).
“Can I offer my advice, Umno people will not disunite. I used to fight against Dr Mahathir Mohamad… Umno didn’t even disunite.
“Party elections are important to invite people from outside of Umno to strengthen the Malay party. If there are blocks here and there, there (will be) other parties (created),” said the former Gua Musang MP. - Mkini
