Show proof of 'charity', Umno man tells PN over money to voters

Umno information chief Isham Jalil has challenged Perikatan Nasional to show evidence of the “charity” the coalition allegedly gave to voters during the 15th general election.

Isham (above, left) called on PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin to clarify the coalition’s “intent” if it did provide cash handouts to voters.

“Hamzah, explain what was PN’s intent in giving money to voters during the general election.

“You said you have strong evidence that PN supposedly did not bribe voters during the previous general election. If true, then reveal this strong evidence so that the people can decide and to prevent slander.

"Also explain the large number of viral videos and police reports regarding those linked to PN giving money to voters and seeking recipients to swear to Allah that they will vote for PAS,” he said on Facebook yesterday.

Isham also advised PN leaders to “not use religion” to gather votes.

“Allah is all-knowing over what you and your associates are doing. Seek forgiveness,” he added.

Yesterday, Hamzah said the most important element in giving cash handouts is the intention.

He was responding to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's defence of giving money during GE15 as “charity”.

“I am not so sure about that (Hadi’s statement). But the point is here when we talk about giving money, it is the intention that is more important,” Hamzah told reporters at the sidelines of Gerakan’s Chinese New Year open house in Kuala Lumpur.

Citing an example, he said people sometimes asked election candidates for money to repair their houses.

“Because of that, we have to be careful about the intention and the people who ask for it (money),” Hamzah added.

Previously, Hadi said the move did not violate election laws because the cash was charity.

The Marang MP reportedly said existing rules only prohibited contesting candidates and their representatives from giving cash to voters. - Mkini
