Solar graft case: July hearing for Rosmah’s appeal

The Court of Appeal has set four days beginning July 11 to hear Rosmah Mansor’s appeal to quash her conviction as well as a 10-year jail sentence and RM970 million fine in a corruption case linked to the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid energy project.

The appeal court has also taken off the previously scheduled hearing dates of June 22 and 23 for the appeal by the wife of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Rosmah’s counsel Akberdin Abdul Kader confirmed the rescheduling during case management earlier this morning.

“July 11 to 14 are the new appeal hearing dates, with the earlier hearing dates on June 22 and 23 vacated.

“This is because we (the defence team) wanted more dates for the three appeals (the collective number of appeals linked to the solar case).

“So, the court set dates that stretch for four days in July,” the lawyer said when contacted today.

Deputy public prosecutor Poh Yih Tinn also confirmed the matter when contacted, adding that the court directed all parties to file written submissions by June 9 and for the reply to be put in by July 4.

“There will be a final case management on July 4,” Poh said.

127 grounds

It was reported that Rosmah’s legal team would be raising 127 grounds in her appeal.

Among the grounds cited are that she had no power to approve any government projects as she was merely the wife of then-premier Najib, and that trial judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan was allegedly biased against her.

She also claimed that the real mastermind behind the crime was actually her former aide, Rizal Mansor.

Initially charged along with her in the case, the prosecutors later dropped the case against Rizal and he became the 21st prosecution witness against her.

Rosmah is also appealing against Zaini’s dismissal of her application for him to withdraw from presiding over the solar corruption case.

On Sept 1 last year at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Zaini found her guilty and imposed sentences in relation to three graft charges involving the project for 369 rural schools in Sarawak. - Mkini
