KOTA KINABALU: An environmental protection NGO here has called on the Sabah state government to stop the reclamation project at the Tanjung Aru beach.

The Save Open Space (SOS) group also wants the Tanjung Aru Eco-Development (TAED) project cancelled and the land returned to the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

SOS coordinator Jefferi Chang reminded the government that deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin had promised in 2021 that the development project would not involve reclamation activities.

“The agreement between TAED and Handal Borneo Resources Sdn Bhd came with a 15-year deal to supply sand and (carry out) reclamation activities.

“While there are still no details regarding the reclamation project from the government, it is obvious that it will follow the approved and gazetted TAED Development Local Plan,” he said in a statement.

Under the TAED development plan, almost 180ha of sea land will be reclaimed and the natural line of the beach will be replaced with a man-made beach which will also accommodate a resort and a golf course.

Chang said instead of TAED, the government should expand the existing Tanjung Aru township which would benefit the locals better.

“The last election showed that Tanjung Aru voters rejected the TAED plan. Unfortunately, the Warisan-led government did not fulfil its promise,” he said.

He called on the public to come together to keep and protect the beach from big corporations which would charge exorbitant fees. - FMT
