Teng deletes 'mabuk' post after PAS froths

Selangor executive councillor Teng Chang Kim has deleted a Facebook post that criticised Permatang Pauh MP Fawwaz Mohamad Jan’s efforts to curb the sale of alcohol at a shopping mall.

Teng’s (above) deleted post had contained the words “Kalau kamu tak minum tapi tengok pun boleh mabuk, itu masalah kamu, bukan masalah arak. Sia-sia kamu sembahyang.” (If you are intoxicated just by looking, the problem is with you and not alcohol. A waste of your prayers.)

His latest Facebook post said he was not “backing down” but he wanted to prevent people from “taking advantage”.

Teng's deleted Facebook post was considered an insult to Muslim prayers by Selangor PAS Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar.

In a statement yesterday, Sukri accused Teng of fanning religious sentiments.

“The issue here is open promotion (of alcoholic beverages). That is what we are objecting to.

“Teng is embarrassing Selangor with his uncouth behaviour and insulting prayer. Why are the Muslim state exco members not criticising him?” asked Shukri.

Two days ago Fawwaz revealed that he, acting on the complaint of his constituents, met the management of Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya, Penang to complain about the sale of alcohol at the mall’s lobby.

Fawwaz said the mall’s management welcomed his criticism and promised to tone down its promotion.

“To protect the sensitivities of Muslims and society, we hope this does not happen again. Alcoholic drinks have an intoxicating and adverse effect on humans,” he argued. - Mkini
