PUTRAJAYA: Two Umno members have filed a complaint with the Registry of Societies over the "no-contest" motion moved for top two party posts at the general assembly last week.

Muhammad Aizat Fikri Mohd Nasir, an Umno member from Terengganu, claimed that the additional motion moved at the Umno general assembly went against the party's constitution.

"According to our party constitution, the election for party president's and deputy president's posts must be done once every three years.

"The additional motion was not discussed at the grassroots level, and there was no notice whatsoever.

"The Umno Supreme Council too did not inform (delegates) of this additional motion at the assembly."

Aizat Fikri told the media this after submitting a letter to RoS, here, today.

When asked if he could face disciplinary action by the party, Aizat Fikri said: "We don't know our fate, we leave it to (the) Umno (leadership).

"If we fight for the right cause, InsyaAllah (God willing), there will be no problem."

He said the additional motion for no contest did not represent the voice of the grassroots, adding that the delegate from Negri Sembilan had "hijacked" the assembly when he proposed the motion.

Aizat Fikri reiterated that the matter was not discussed at the divisional or branch level.

"If it was not discussed, how can you say that this is a grassroots' motion?

"The additional motion only benefits two people — the president and deputy president, whoever they may be."

The same complaint was filed by Negri Sembilan Umno member Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Muhammad Rom.

He said they did not represent any group in the party and were not told to lodge a complaint by any Umno leader.

"We are just exercising our rights as Umno members. We do not represent anyone."

He described the party's decision to raise the voting quota to 160,000 as a progressive step, but added that the decision not to allow competition for the top two positions was a step back.

"They should have at least brought it to the 191 divisions to be discussed."

The 2022 Umno general assembly last week approved a motion for the posts of party president and deputy president to remain unchallenged in the party election.

The additional motion was proposed by Rembau Umno division delegate Mohd Shukri Shamsudin during the debate on the party president's policy speech. It was seconded by Marang Umno division chief Datuk Nik Dir Nik Wan Ku.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying that Umno leaders who went against the approved motion of no-contest for the top two party positions may face disciplinary action.

He had cited Article 8 of the party constitution, which states that the Umno general assembly is the highest authority in the party. - NST
