'Umno leaders acquitted after being charged under Thomas should sue'

Umno leaders who were charged in court during Tommy Thomas’ time as the attorney-general and had since been cleared should sue Thomas for malice and defamation, said Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno Youth chief said this in his policy speech at the wing's annual general assembly held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre this morning.

He claimed that there was a clear element of selective prosecution and political influence in the country's judiciary.

"Umno Youth wants the government to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry to take strong action against all the disclosures made by Thomas, which had clearly shown elements of selective prosecution and even political influence in the judiciary.

"Umno Youth also would like to suggest to all Umno leaders who had since been acquitted by the court to come together and sue Thomas who had been proven to be malicious, aimed at humiliating and destroying Umno's reputation by doing selective prosecution," he said.

Thomas was appointed as the attorney-general after Pakatan Harapan came to power in 2018. He served on the post until February 2020 before resigning when the Harapan federal government collapsed due to a political coup.

During Thomas' service as the country's top lawyer, a slew of Umno leaders was charged in court.

They include former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who had since been found guilty of seven counts of corruption-related charges and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

Other Umno leaders who were charged during Thomas’ supervision of the Attorney-General's Chambers include Shahrir Samad, Ahmad Maslan, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, Musa Aman, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Bung Moktar Radin and Isa Samad.

Since then, several of them have been acquitted by the court, including Tengku Adnan, Shahrir, and Ahmad.

Taking a dig at PN

Meanwhile, Asyraf also took a dig at Perikatan Nasional in his speech, urging MACC and the current attorney-general to go after those who had allegedly practised political bribery and embezzled public funds for their political purposes.

He insinuated that PN was only putting up a show when they collected donations from supporters to fund their election campaign, but could spend lavishly on their campaign drives including allegedly paying hundreds of ringgit to voters.

Asyraf also congratulated the MACC for its recent arrests of suspects in relation to the alleged misappropriation of the country's stimulus package amounting to RM92.5 billion, which was approved by the previous PN government when Malaysia was under a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This proves what we had suspected all this while, that there was a possibility that billions of ringgit of the rakyat's money had been embezzled through directly-awarded projects which were approved during the emergency when PN was the government.

"Maybe that was why certain parties, which had theatrically collected coins (from supporters) to erect their flags, could spend a lot including giving out hundreds of ringgit to outstation voters and students.

"Thus, Umno Youth would like to urge MACC and the AG to continue going after those who are suspected to be involved in bribery and misappropriation of billions of ringgit of rakyat's money while hiding behind their 'clean and stable slogan', and charge them in court," he said. - Mkini
