Umno member acted on his own, Ahmad Said says over objection filed at ROS

The Umno member who filed a notice of objection to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) did not represent the views or stance of Terengganu Umno, said the state chapter’s chief Ahmad Said.

Ahmad (above), who is also the Kijal assemblyperson, said that the Kuala Nerus Umno member Muhammad Aizat Fikri Mohd Nasir, had acted on his own.

“Who is he? Aizat is just an ordinary member.

“If he wanted to raise the matter, it should be done at the division committee special meeting and so on,” Ahmad was quoted as saying by Bernama in Dungun, Terengganu today.

Ahmad said that he had left it to Umno’s top leadership to determine the form of action or penalty to be imposed against Aizat.

He added that the party’s decision to not contest its top positions was not without precedent, as state elections are expected to be held this year.

The six states that will hold their respective elections are Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang.

On Jan 14, the Umno general assembly passed a resolution to not have the party’s top two positions open for contest in its upcoming internal election.

The motion was proposed by Rembau delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin on Jan 13, who submitted it as a supplementary motion while debating the president’s policy speech.

Although many stood up in support of it, several delegates were seen not too pleased with the decision.

Yesterday, two Umno members filed a notice of objection to the ROS over the matter.

Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Muhammad Rom and Aizat claimed that the resolution was invalid and contravened the party’s constitution.

They cited Clause 9.3 of the party’s constitution, which states that the party president and deputy president must be elected through a divisional representative assembly every three years.

A notable opponent to the motion was former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who commended Aizat and Fiqri for their objection.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan earlier said that he would meet the ROS to address the no-contest resolution for the party's top two positions.

He added that the party's attorneys will be present at the meeting to explain how the motion's proposal and tabling processes were carried out in compliance with Umno's constitution. - Mkini
