KUALA LUMPUR: Party veteran Dusuki Ahmad has been appointed as the first chairman of Umno’s council of ulama (religious scholars).
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had yesterday called for the establishment of the council to be expedited. It was first mooted at the party’s general assembly 12 years ago.
“With this, we hope the religious scholars would be able to come together to provide us guidance to bring us to the right path,” he said during his winding up speech at the party’s 2022 general assembly here.
Dusuki is the father of Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi.
Yesterday, Zahid said the formation of the council was one of the actions needed to be taken by the party for it to move forward.
Separately, he also announced the establishment of an Umno institute for academics to be chaired by Kamaruddin M Said, with Abdul Mua’ti @ Zambri Ahmad as his deputy.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi would be the institute’s chief coordinator and executive secretary, Zahid said.
“We want this institute to begin operations immediately. We hope that with the contribution of new ideas (from the institute), Umno will be able to move forward,” he said.
He said Umno needed to put forward policies and approaches for issues that confronted the nation and the people. - FMT
