Wee: MCA critical of Umno but remains loyal to BN

MCA has never betrayed BN’s ideals despite being openly critical of Umno-led plans to be a part of the government with former rival Pakatan Harapan, said party president Wee Ka Siong.

Wee explained that MCA's action was in line with BN's way, unlike Umno who he claimed had "abandoned" two key principles of the coalition – consultation and consensus – on whether to cooperate with Harapan or Perikatan Nasional when neither held the simple majority needed to form the new government.

“They (Umno) were busy making connections and forging new political alliances. We (MCA) saw the political developments but decided not to interfere and stop them.

"Umno found a new partner (in long-time rival Harapan), and the loyalty of BN member parties is suddenly questioned," Wee said in an interview with The Malaysian Insight.

He stressed that Umno made decisions without consulting other partners, but MCA has maintained its loyalty to BN despite being called out by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as one of 10 MPs who had backed Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to become prime minister.

This was allegedly done at a meeting Zahid had dubbed the “St Regis move” and said it was also an attempt to remove him as the BN chairperson.

"We have never betrayed this coalition," Wee stated.

‘Stay true to BN spirit’

On the other hand, Wee reportedly said "many people" had appealed to MCA to dissolve the coalition over Umno’s conduct.

“We too want Umno to stay true to the BN spirit of having consultation among component parties. That is the most original spirit of BN.

“No one party has all the say just because it has more votes or more seats than other member parties. We (BN parties) are all equal," the Ayer Hitam MP added.

In future elections, Wee said MCA as a component party will also continue to contest under the BN ticket.

Previously, MCA had called on Zahid to resign as BN chairperson, following the coalition's dismal GE15 performance with only 30 seats. - Mkini
