PAKISTAN LOCKDOWN: CONTAINERISTAN

 

Pakistani authorities have placed thousands of shipping containers across Islamabad to block major roads and entry points ahead of a planned protest march on September 27, 2026.  In a new move sharp steel spikes have also been welded to the containers to prevent protesters from trying to move them.  

Why the Barriers Are Up?

Planned Protests: Supporters of the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), called for a major long march to demand his release. 

Heavy Fortification: Authorities have deployed over 2,000 to several thousand shipping containers, with some welded together and fitted with outward-facing metal spikes or nails to prevent people from moving or climbing them.

Security Lockdown: More than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel are being brought in from other regions to secure the capital and seal off the high-security Red Zone.

Public Impact: The blockades have disrupted local traffic, halted commercial goods transport, and led to the closure of some schools and heightened emergency readiness in area hospitals.

"Containerisation": The recurring use of freight containers for crowd control has become such a frequent political tactic in Pakistan that locals and commentators commonly refer to the capital during these periods as "Containeristan".
