Muhyiddin, Hadi vow to strengthen PN as coalition remains headless

As uncertainty looms over the leadership of Perikatan Nasional, the presidents of Bersatu and PAS have vowed to reinforce the opposition coalition.

According to a posting on Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin's Facebook account, the commitment was reached during a sit-down between the outgoing PN chairperson and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang earlier today.

"Alhamdulillah. We had a discussion and reached a consensus to strengthen PN," Muhyiddin said in his social media post.

It was accompanied by three photographs showing Muhyiddin side by side with Hadi on a sofa at the Pagoh MP's residence in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.

Also present were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, PN and Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali, and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

The post, however, did not elaborate on whether the leaders had also reached an agreement on who they wanted to succeed Muhyiddin.

The former prime minister stepped down as PN chairperson on Dec 30 following a crisis in the Perlis government, which saw relations between the two parties become increasingly tense after the menteri besar post went from Bersatu to PAS.

Speculations have arisen over his successor, with PAS staking claims to the post without naming the party’s candidate.

Among those who have been speculated as a potential candidate include PAS vice-president and Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and Tuan Ibrahim. - Mkini
