UMNO AGM | The next Umno internal election due by this year will only be held after the 16th general election has concluded, according to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“After the general election,” Zahid said to reporters at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur when quizzed on the matter today.
To a further question on whether the top two positions will be contested, Zahid again said, “We wait until after the general election.”
The current Parliament first sat on Dec 19, 2022, so its five-year term expires (automatic dissolution) on Dec 19, 2027, unless dissolved earlier.
This means the latest possible date for GE16 would be within 60 days after that, on Feb 17, 2028.

In May 2022, ahead of the 15th general election called on November the same year, Umno had amended its constitution to empower its supreme council to postpone election at the supreme council, division and branch levels for no more than 18 months from the date the election was supposed to be held, or no more than six months after a general election is held - whichever is later.
“Umno’s constitution has been amended, namely that party election may be held after 18 months from the final date of the election year, or after a general election,” said Zahid today, in reference to the last amendments.
Zahid and Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan defended their positions uncontested in the last party election in March 2023 for a three-year term. - Mkini
