PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia is stepping up efforts to attract medical travellers from Bangladesh as visa restrictions affecting Bangladeshi patients travelling to India disrupt long-established treatment routes.

The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) said it was intensifying engagement with Bangladesh as part of its initiatives under the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, which aims to position the country as a global leader in healthcare travel.

For years, Bangladeshi patients have travelled mainly to India due to its proximity and well-established referral networks. However, tighter visa rules have prompted many patients and healthcare facilitators to explore other regional options.

As part of its outreach, MHTC will organise Malaysia Healthcare Week in Dhaka from April 5 to 12, connecting healthcare facilitators, travel partners, and prospective patients with leading Malaysian hospitals.

“Bangladesh is an important market for us, and we are seeing growing interest from Bangladeshi patients seeking trusted and high-quality treatment overseas,” MHTC CEO Suriaghandi Suppiah said in a statement.

“Through initiatives such as Malaysia Healthcare Week in Dhaka, we aim to bring Malaysia’s healthcare ecosystem closer to local partners and patients, strengthen referral networks, and showcase Malaysia’s medical expertise and patient-centred care.”

Suriaghandi said demand for overseas treatment among Bangladeshi patients was driven largely by the need for specialised procedures in fields such as cardiology, oncology, organ transplantation, and advanced surgeries.

He added that strong air connectivity between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur, supported by multiple daily flights, enhanced Malaysia’s accessibility for Bangladeshi patients and their families seeking reliable healthcare abroad.

Malaysia is positioning itself alongside regional medical tourism hubs such as Thailand and Singapore, offering internationally-trained specialists, modern healthcare infrastructure, and competitive treatment costs.

Malaysia’s healthcare travel sector generated revenue of RM3.34 billion in 2025 and attracted 1.84 million healthcare travellers, underscoring the country’s growing reputation as a regional medical tourism destination. - FMT
