Albert escalates campaign against Azam, seeks royal intervention

Businessperson Albert Tei, who has been on a warpath against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki since exposing the Sabah mining scandal, has now submitted a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The memorandum calls for action against Azam over his shareholding controversy and allegations that the MACC is colluding with businesspersons to facilitate corporate takeovers.

Claiming that the government has failed to address the issue effectively, Tei said: “We as Malaysians have the right to know what is happening.”

“So we have no other choice - we don’t know who to turn to. As Malaysians, we see the palace and the Agong as our final avenue for complaint.

“Only the Agong can save this country,” he told reporters after handing the memorandum to a police officer outside the palace gates today.

Tei also questioned why the police had not interviewed any MACC officers or senior personnel regarding their investigations into the alleged “corporate mafia”.

“This raises suspicion among the public,” he added, accusing authorities of double standards in their investigations.

On April 1, Bukit Aman’s Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Investigation Unit chief Fazlisyam Abd Majid said statements had been recorded from 41 individuals so far - none of whom were from the anti-graft agency.

The MACC has denied any involvement in the alleged corporate mafia, which was first exposed by Bloomberg.

Tei, who is also facing corruption charges, has accused Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration of shielding several Sabah politicians he implicated in the scandal.

The prime minister has denied the allegation, stating last November that investigations were still ongoing. However, there has been no update since.

‘Proceedings have started’

Yesterday, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said Putrajaya has yet to be informed of any possible action against Azam over the shareholding issue.

He reiterated that the cabinet had decided to leave the matter to Chief Secretary to the Government, Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who chaired the investigation committee on the case.

In a March 31 statement, Shamsul said proceedings related to the probe into Azam’s share ownership had already been initiated under the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993.

He said this followed the tabling of the committee’s findings at a cabinet meeting on March 11.

Shamsul also denied a Bloomberg report alleging that Anwar had asked the committee to delay the disclosure of its findings on Azam’s shareholdings. - Mkini
