Public quizzes MCMC over suit against Sunway Lagoon: “Who pays for your botched Family Day?”

“JUST who exactly was footing the bill?”. This was the pertinent question among Malaysians following media reports that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is suing Sunway lagoon for a family day event which turned awry.

As shared on a recent Malay Mail’s Facebook portal, the multimedia regulator’s RM1.85 mil lawsuit against Sunway Lagoon Sdn Bhd has moved a step closer to trial following recent court filings.

First filed at the Shah Alam High Court on Jan 2, the suit is now scheduled for case management on April 29 before Justice Anita Harun after the MCMC submitted new documents last week.

The suit stems from an alleged food poisoning incident during an MCMC-organised family day event held at the theme park in late 2025.

MCMC is pursuing a full refund of RM1.82 mil paid for the event along with medical costs and damages as it claimed that negligence in food preparation had led to hundreds of attendees falling ill.

Sunway Lagoon has denied liability and is seeking to have the claim dismissed.

The post has generated 556 Likes, 272 comments and 110 shares at time of publication. However, the main thing that seems to be on concerned citizens’ collective psyche was not the welfare of the stricken civil servants and their families but rather who was footing the bill for this family day extravaganza.

The call for explanation was clearly enunciated by unimpressed taxpayers who saw the MCMC Family Day as a “lavish” event by a government body.

The jamboree was equated to a “T20 standard of corporate family day” though one commenter sought to justify the amount spent as it involved large number of attendees – “some 6,000++ at RM200++ pax and not an annual evremt”.

One obviously disgusted commenter asked what was being served to tally up a RM1.85 million bill – “caviar, lobster and Kobe beef?”

The retort was equally sarcastic when it was noted that government department expenditure must be at least “10 times compared to normal companies” to entertain the “entire kampung”.

More than a few queried how could a government department spend so much on a single day event? This was also not in line with the Prime Minister’s stated intention for Malaysians to be more financially prudent/tighten their belts.

The high-profile suit was also highlighted on individual social media accounts denoting that the public is gripped by this case of mass food poisoning involving a premier theme park operator.

On X, pro-Madani influencer JOKER (@tjerealjoker) defended the event by remarking that the MCMC had its own budget for it was not a mere “kedai runcit” (sundry shop).

However, it was claimed by the poster that the admission price to a day out at Sunway Lagoon was RM193 per head while by his calculations, the family day event cost approximately RM276 per head (inclusive of kids).

The insinuation was that this was NOT a cheap affair and that attendees should not be exposed to such health hazards such as food poisoning.

Regardless of circumstances, this ‘sh*tty’ incident has raised uncomfortable questions for the Madani administration.

Should civil servants be jollying on taxpayer’s monies during a cost-of-living hardship amid the impending global energy crisis even when even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has barred this year’s Hari Raya open houses at all ministries, government agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs)?

Whether a Family Day outing is deserved, justified or even within budget, it must be said that it is not a good look for incumbent government. –  Focus Malaysia
