Kepong MP offers RM5k for info leading to arrest of Sungai Buloh Prison escapee

DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng is offering RM5,000 for information that can lead to the arrest of a suspected child sexual offender, who escaped from the Sungai Buloh Prison in Selangor last week.

In a statement, the Kepong MP also raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the police’s alleged failure to follow proper procedures when transporting the detainee.

“How does a detainee under full custody simply run off during a transfer? How is such a lapse even possible in a high-security environment?

“A viral video circulating online appears to show the detainee not being handcuffed at the time of escape.

“If this is true, it raises serious and troubling questions. If it is not, the authorities must immediately clarify.

“Either way, the silence and delay in providing clear answers are unacceptable,” he said, adding that those responsible must be held accountable.

Expressing his frustration, Lim said it is unacceptable that the fugitive has remained at large for a week since his escape on April 9.

‘Why cops did stand far away?’

Similarly, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer also questioned police procedures in the incident, saying that the accused should have been handcuffed at all times.

He also took issue with the manner in which police officers were guarding the suspect.

“This is the SOP. From the CCTV footage, it is apparent that the Pakistani detainee was not in handcuffs and was free to run.

“How come? The police must investigate this.

“Furthermore, the footage shows the police personnel standing far (away) from the rear of the Black Maria (police truck) rather than guarding the rear. This is rather strange. Why?” Rayer said.

The lawmakers were referring to a CCTV recording that had gone viral, which purportedly showed the moment the suspect - Pakistani national Muhammad Hassan - escaped from police custody at the Sungai Buloh Prison field after attending trial proceedings at a Shah Alam court.

The footage showed a group of people being unloaded from a police truck when one of them started sprinting away.

Two of the escorting police officers gave chase, while another was seen making a similar attempt but stopped after several steps.

The Prisons Department on Monday said it was aware of the viral video and was investigating its authenticity.

On the same day, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said police are investigating whether negligence led to the escape. - Mkini
