26 drums dumped at Jempol oil palm plantation contained chemical waste, says Negri exco man

SEREMBAN: The 26 drums found dumped on an abandoned plot in an oil palm plantation in Jempol are believed to be filled with chemical waste, says state exco S. Veerapan.

The state climate change, entrepreneurship, human resources, cooperatives and consumerism committee chairman said preliminary findings have revealed the drums contained paint sludge and coolant.

"The Department of Environment (DOE) has taken samples and these would be sent to the Chemistry Department in Petaling Jaya for analysis.

"We are now looking for the landowner as part of our probe," he said in a statement.

Veerapan said the DOE was notified of the discovery by the Ayer Hitam police around 5pm on April 14.

"Since the location was remote, investigations only started the following morning," he said.

On Wednesday (April 15), a Hazmat team from the Fire and Rescue Services Department was dispatched to the area in Felcra Air Hitam Seri Jempol to help in the probe.

They had also helped open the drums to allow DOE personnel to take samples. - Star
