Zara Qairina 's case: Coroner's Court told 15 mobile phones sent for forensic analysis

KOTA KINABALU: The Coroner's Court was told that 15 mobile phones, together with SIM cards, were handed to the Computer Crime Investigation Unit of the Police Forensic Laboratory for forensic analysis.

An analyst from the unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohd Zaidi Abu Hassan, 44, said he received two separate submissions of exhibits for analysis on Aug 8 and Aug 19, 2025 from the Papar district police headquarters.

For the first submission on Aug 8, Mohd Zaidi received a transparent plastic police exhibit bag containing 11 mobile phones together with SIM cards from a sergeant.

A further four mobile phones with SIM cards in a similar police exhibit bag were handed to him by another sergeant on Aug 19.

"I found all the exhibits to be in good condition," he said while reading his witness statement for more than an hour before coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan today.

The 70th witness said the exhibits were accompanied by the Application Form for Examination/Analysis of Exhibits (MF01), as well as an Internal Exhibit Handover Certificate and an Exhibit Acceptance Certificate (MF02).

"Based on the MF01 form, the investigating officer requested a full examination of all mobile phone exhibits to retrieve social media data, WhatsApp visuals, verbatim records, images and deleted images from February 2025 until the present," he said.

Mohd Zaidi said he carried out the analysis using XRY forensic equipment for mobile devices.

"Before conducting the analysis, I ensured the exhibits were in good condition. I then connected the cables to the devices and began the examination. I conducted the analysis in accordance with ISO 17025 standards and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

"After completing the analysis, I converted the findings into PDF format using my office computer, which only I have access to," he said.

He told the court that examination of several exhibits could not be carried out as some devices could not be powered on after charging due to faulty on/off buttons, while others had damaged LCD screens.

However, the SIM cards were still examined for the investigating officer's reference.

Mohd Zaidi said he returned the first batch of exhibits together with his report on Aug 19, 2025, and the second batch of exhibits on Sept 2, 2025.

Zara, 13, was found unconscious on the ground floor of her hostel on July 16, 2025 and was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. - NST
