Unfair to adjudge newly minted TalentCorp CEO as “political appointee”, “minister roping in gang member”

WHILE nobody is certain why former Talent Corp Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) group CEO Edward Ling left the country’s key talent strategy driver after a mere five-month stint, it is a bit disturbing that successor Biruntha Mooruthi is subjected to what can be termed as “political disrespect”.

That is, of course, if comments by detractors on the Human Resources Ministry’s Facebook page can serve as an indication.

For starters, the Ministry which these days is known by its Malay abbreviation KESUMA (very much popularised by former minister Steven Sim Chee Keong) has featured two photos of Biruntha receiving her letters of appointment from current minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan at his Putrajaya office yesterday (April 15).

“With over two decades of leadership experience spanning government, academia and industry, there’s confidence that Biruntha can lead TalentCorp towards greater excellence and high-impact achievements,” noted KESUMA.

‘Her outstanding record in driving national initiatives, empowering the innovation agenda and bridging the gap between research and market needs is an added value in strengthening the country’s talent ecosystem.”

Instead of adhering to the age-old adage of “keeping your mouth shut if you have nothing good to say”, it is an unpleasant sight for detractors of the PKR vice-president who is also the Sungai Buluh MP to seize the moment by targetting Biruntha with hurtful racial slur like “political appointee who is easily shoved around”.

Other disparaging remarks include “appointing his adapted sister”, “roping in his own gang members” and even “kicap (soy sauce) appointing sos tiram (oyster sauce), viscous and thick”.

Editor’s Note: “Kicap” is a self-explanatory racial slur which coincidentally is popularised by anti-kuil haram vigilante S. Chandrasegaran a.k.a. Cikgu Chandra at the height of the recent illegal temple controversy.

Like it or not, the rightist fraternity did ruin what otherwise would be a formal welcome ceremony to the holder of Master of Business Administration from Victoria University and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science from Coventry University with reminders  to the Malays “to reject this tribe come next GE (general election)”.

In essence, the picture painted is that the Malays are once again at the losing end to what is deemed as the pendatang race.

In fact, the trolling is rather ‘out-of-hand’ so much so that the HR Ministry has to limit who can comment on its post.

There is no sheer regard at least for apolitical Biruntha who had previously held senior leadership roles at PlaTCOM Ventures under the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) whereby she is also a fellow as well as British Telecom.

Meritocracy-wise, her experience includes leading large-scale programmes involving multiple stakeholders, particularly in technology commercialisation, industry-academia collaboration and innovation across the energy, technology and sustainability sectors.

Among her key achievements are spearheading national innovation funding programmes and accelerating technology commercialisation efforts that have benefitted hundreds of Malaysian enterprises.

Above all else, she has also mentored more than 5,000 entrepreneurs, innovators and businesses nationwide. –  Focus Malaysia
