Amanah eyeing Putrajaya, Titiwangsa seats in GE16

Khalid Samad says Amanah wants to contest more seats in the federal territories, especially in the event of a three-cornered fight between PH, BN, and PN.

Federal territories Amanah chief Khalid Samad, a former three-term MP for Shah Alam, contested the Titiwangsa seat in GE15 but lost to Umno’s Johari Ghani by 4,632 votes.
PETALING JAYA:
Amanah has expressed its intention to vie for the Putrajaya and Titiwangsa seats in the next general election (GE16), parliamentary constituencies currently held by Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional (BN), respectively.

Federal territories Amanah chief Khalid Samad said the party intends to contest three or four parliamentary seats in the federal territories, despite currently holding none.

The other FT seat Amanah intends to contest in GE16 is Labuan. It contested the seat in the 2022 general election (GE15) but finished fourth in terms of votes.

“If there is a three-cornered fight (between PH, BN, and PN), we are aiming to contest more seats than we did in GE15,” Khalid said, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Khalid, the Amanah communications director, expressed hope that Pakatan Harapan (PH) components DAP and PKR would allow Amanah to contest these seats.

Titiwangsa is currently represented by FT Umno chief Johari Ghani, who is also the investment, trade and industry minister.

Johari, an Umno vice-president, defeated Khalid and two other candidates in GE15, obtaining a majority of 4,632 votes ahead of the Amanah leader and going on to a second term as Titiwangsa MP.

He first won the seat in 2013.

The Putrajaya seat is held by Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin, who won with a 2,310-vote majority ahead of BN’s Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, the former FT minister.

In GE15, PKR contested the Putrajaya seat for PH but finished third, winning less than half the votes obtained by Radzi and Tengku Adnan.

Titiwangsa PKR deputy chief Ramli Taha also expressed hope that PH would wrest the Titiwangsa seat from Umno.

However, he said there should be no public debates over seats, and that negotiations should be held internally within PH.

“Titiwangsa PKR is committed to the process of negotiations in the spirit of cooperation in PH. We must prioritise formulas driven by data, machinery strength, and winnability without affecting unity,” he said in a statement. - FMT
