KUALA LUMPUR: A video of a group of good samaritans helping a turtle trapped among rocks on a beach in Terengganu has gone viral with over 158,000 views.
The two-minute clip shows three people attempting to lift the distressed turtle from the rocks it was wedged in.
The clip cut to the turtle on a sandy shore, with the group encouraging it to return to the sea by walking alongside as it moved.
The TikTok video, posted on April 22 by user @bolokserokkk, has garnered a flood of positive comments praising the act.
User @Anuar_5626 commented, "You all have earned many blessings... Alhamdulillah, may you all be protected by Allah."
User @Hanizasalleh also expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank you, kind souls."
While the rescue was successful and shows commendable public spirit, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, on its website, advises the public to report any sightings of stranded or distressed turtles to their hotline at 03-8888 5019.
This allows trained personnel to conduct a safe and effective rescue, ensuring the turtle receives proper care if needed.
The Fisheries Department has advised the public not to consume turtle eggs and to avoid disturbing nesting turtles or their hatchlings as they make their way to the ocean.
Marine turtles are a protected species under the Fisheries Act, while the Terengganu Turtle Enactment bans the sale of leatherback turtle eggs and provides jail terms for killing, possessing, removing or destroying eggs. - NST
