KUALA LUMPUR: Two Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) central committee members remain in Israeli military custody after being abducted in international waters near Greece yesterday.
Sumud Nusantara Control Centre (SNCC) director-general Datuk Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby said the continued detention of Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek is believed to be aimed at intimidating and weakening the humanitarian mission.
He said SNCC had also received reports that the activists faced provocation and physical assault while in custody.
"SNCC has received information of violent incidents during detention, where activists were forced to remain in highly uncomfortable conditions, with some sustaining injuries.
"We confirm that two GSF central committee members, Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek, are still being held and are believed to be targeted to undermine the entire movement," he said during a press conference broadcast live from SNCC Bangi tonight.
He said the situation has raised serious concerns over the safety of humanitarian activists involved in the mission.
Sani Araby urged the international community, including Malaysians, to continue exerting pressure on Israel to secure the immediate release of those still detained.
"SNCC calls on all parties to continue speaking out and to demand the release of those still being held.
"We also urge Malaysians to strengthen solidarity efforts, including holding special prayers, reciting Qunut Nazilah and sharing verified information on the Palestinian issue at both national and international levels," he said.
Earlier, he was reported as saying that 10 Malaysians and other GSF participants abducted by Israeli forces had been released at Ierapetra Port, Greece, today.
He said the Malaysian delegation was among 175 humanitarian activists detained in international waters near the island of Crete yesterday.
According to him, all activists were transported by bus to Heraklion Airport, Crete, and are expected to be flown to Istanbul International Airport on a flight provided by the Turkiye government.
"The decision on whether the Malaysian activists will continue the mission or return home will depend on their health condition and the current situation.
"It will be decided through consensus between SNCC and GSF," he said. - NST
