KUALA LUMPUR: Umno and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have agreed to maintain their cooperation in the Negri Sembilan unity government, affirming their commitment to the state's stability and the welfare of its people.
The agreement was finalised in a joint statement today, following a meeting co-chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is PH chairman, and Umno president Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"The Umno-Pakatan Harapan Leadership Consultative Council has reached a consensus to maintain the unity government cooperation in Negri Sembilan for the sake of the state's stability and the people's well-being," said PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki in the statement.
This meeting was convened following recent political developments in Negri Sembilan, particularly the move by 14 Umno assemblymen to withdraw their support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.
The council also agreed on a mechanism to handle potentially contentious issues in the future.
"The Umno-Pakatan Harapan Leadership Consultative Council also agreed to ensure that any Negri Sembilan state government decision that could spark any form of sensitivity or open room for disagreement must be immediately referred to the Council," the statement added.
The statement also noted that the council respects the decisions made by the political bureaus of both Umno and PH on the matter.
Earlier, Saifuddin had mentioned that the meeting would cover a range of issues and would not solely focus on the political impasse. - NST
