It responds to a report in health news portal which questioned the number of official overseas trips made by top civil servants between May 1 and June 19.

In a statement, the ministry said the government’s austerity drive aims to offset part of the sharp increase in subsidy expenditure caused by the conflict, which has driven up global oil prices.
It said among the measures it has implemented include restricting official overseas travel to pre-scheduled commitments, mandatory meetings, and essential engagements that have strategic national impact.
The ministry was responding to a report in health news portal CodeBlue which questioned the number of official overseas trips made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and senior government leaders between May 1 and June 19.
“The world is facing increasing geopolitical uncertainty and supply disruptions, and certain official visits cannot be postponed as they involve strategic national interests,” it said.
“Official visits should not be judged solely on the number of trips, but rather on their purpose, necessity, and the outcomes achieved for the country and its people.”
Citing Anwar’s recent working visits to Russia and Turkmenistan as an example, the ministry said they benefitted the country by strengthening its energy security and diversifying long-term energy supply sources amid continued global market volatility.
It also said Malaysia’s participation in various international meetings and forums related to trade, energy, health, defence, and regional cooperation is crucial to safeguarding its national interests.
Apart from strengthening ties with strategic partners, such events also help the country ensure continued access to supplies, investments, and economic opportunities, said the ministry.
“The government remains committed to prudent financial management.
“Controllable expenditures are being tightened, while critical sectors such as health, education, subsidies, and public assistance continue to be safeguarded.
“This approach ensures that every ringgit is used optimally to navigate global challenges while protecting the welfare of the people and the stability of the national economy,” it said.
On March 11, Anwar said the government will cancel official Raya open houses and reduce the number of trips abroad with the aim of saving funds in view of the economic impact of the Middle East conflict.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, stressed that Putrajaya’s austerity measures would not affect critical public services, including the health and education sectors. - FMT
