SUNGAI GOLOK: The Thai government today handed over 650,000 baht (about RM80,000) in compensation to one of two Malaysians injured in a recent bomb blast in Tak Bai.
Narathiwat Governor Bunchuay Homyamyen presented the compensation cheque to Muhammad Yusri Udin during a ceremony at the Sungai Golok Customs Office this evening.
Bunchuay said the compensation was provided under a Thai government fund for property damage and assistance to victims affected by security incidents.
"The Thai government is deeply concerned about incidents like this and is committed to providing the necessary assistance not only to Malaysians but also to other foreign tourists who fall victim to such attacks.
"The government has instructed all security agencies, particularly those in southern Thailand, to further tighten security measures to ensure public safety, including that of foreign visitors.
"We also call on everyone to condemn those responsible for this act, as such violence affects everyone and damages public confidence," he said.
He said Thai authorities remained concerned for all victims and had ordered tighter security controls to prevent similar incidents.
"This is the first such incident this year, and we hope it will not happen again," he said.
Yusri, who was accompanied by several friends, thanked the Thai government for the assistance.
"I am thankful to the Thai government for its concern and assistance," he said.
Earlier, Yusri and another Malaysian injured in the blast, Abdullah Syarapi Abd Rahman, each received 10,000 baht (RM1,300) and 50,000 baht (about RM6,500) in compensation for their injuries.
Also present was Narathiwat Provincial Police Chief Major General Prayong Kotsakha.
On Monday, Yusri and Abdullah were injured when a roadside bomb exploded beneath a culvert along Highway 42 in Kampung Phrai Wan near the Tak Bai sub-province.
The two were earlier warded at Narathiwat Hospital before being transferred to Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Bharu for further treatment. - NST
