Damai Perdana residents seek official safety assurance after landslide

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Pangsapuri Damai Perdana 2 have demanded an official explanation from management and local authorities regarding building safety, following a notice allowing them to return home starting today.

The dilemma stems from resident concerns over a clause stating that returning to the premises is at their own risk, raising doubts about safety a week after a landslide occurred nearby.

Block D resident Lina Ridzuan, 43, said the permission letter issued by the local authority lacked concrete safety guarantees and basic utility restoration.

"The local authority handed us permission letters to return, but what disappointed residents is the 'at own risk' clause. An answer like this only reinforces suspicions that the area is not entirely safe.

"If a follow-up soil settlement occurs and threatens lives, who will be held responsible? We want a solid answer and guarantee, not a hands-off decision," she said when met today.

Lina expressed frustration over the Joint Management Body (JMB), claiming it had failed to appear or provide official updates since the soil movement occurred last week.

She added that the absence of management and local community leaders left residents feeling abandoned and torn over what to do.

"Since the day of the incident, there has been no official information from our Joint Management Body. When told to return today, water supply was still unavailable.

"No maintenance or repair work is visible at the site. How can elderly residents and families with many children haul belongings up to upper floors?" she said.

Another Block D resident, Anun Sharif, 74, said she was too terrified by the incident to move back into her home for now.

Anun decided to stay at her child's house nearby after the incident, returning only occasionally to inspect her unit.

"During the incident around 8pm, neighbours felt tremors and saw water flowing. Even though there is a letter allowing us back today, I remain worried about safety aspects and fear the worst.

"To make matters worse, water supply to Blocks C and D has been cut off for a week. At my age, I do not have the strength to carry buckets of water from the tanks provided and have to rely on my children," she said.

Water supply is expected to be restored by Oct 10, complicating daily affairs for residents instructed to return earlier.

"I hope the relevant authorities and apartment management take swift action by coming to the ground to give an official safety guarantee," she said.

It was previously reported that residents living near the slope at Pangsapuri Damai Perdana in Cheras were ordered to evacuate following a landslide near the building.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department received an emergency call at 9.03pm regarding the incident near Block D of Pangsapuri Damai Perdana.

The landslide is believed to have been caused by an underground water pipe leak. - NST
