IN A rare public show of solidarity with Anwar Ibrahim, acting PAS president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has reiterated that the opposition chief is a victim of political conspiracy and his sodomy charge should be tried in a shariah court.
Pushing the party line that such offences can face Islamic legal punishment, party organ Harakah Daily quoted him as saying: “Since the beginning, PAS has said that matters related to syarak must be tried in shariah court. That is what we hope.”
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for sodomy after his acquittal was overturned by the Appeal Court in 2014.
Tuan Ibrahim said PAS had always considered Anwar a political victim, even before Dr Mahathir began to speak about it.
“Recently, Pakatan Harapan is trying to bring back Anwar because they have no other figures. The crisis is in Pakatan Harapan,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference in Kota Baru yesterday.
Previously, in an interview with British daily, The Guardian, Dr Mahathir said Anwar was a victim of a political vendetta and that a new administration would seek a royal pardon for him to allow him to re-enter politics.
Anwar served as Dr Mahathir’s deputy from 1993 to 1998. He was sacked and arrested in September 1998, and subsequently charged with corruption for allegedly interfering with police investigations into claims of sexual misconduct made against him.
