Ambulance in Penang rammed after beating red light, slams into motorcyclists

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A private ambulance, on its way to Simpang Ampat to attend to a distress call, was rammed by a car at the Jalan Song Ban Keng-Pusat Perniagaan Gemilang traffic lights junction here this morning.
The impact of the collision caused the ambulance to skid and ram into several motorcyclists who were waiting for the lights to turn green.

One of the motorcyclists was injured in the 8.15am incident. He is currently being treated.
A two-minute video of the incident has since gone viral.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said investigations that showed the ambulance, coming from Pusat Perniagaan Gemilang, did not stop at the lights.
He said a car, which was driving on the stretch, managed to brake in time to give way to the ambulance.“When the ambulance reached the middle of the road, the ambulance was rammed by another car. As a result of the collision, the ambulance skidded to the opposite lane and rammed into a group of motorcyclists.
“Two motorcyclists were involved. One of them has lodged a report while the other is being treated for injuries," he said.
Nik Ros Azhan said the ambulance was empty at the time of the incident and was rushing to Simpang Ampat to pick up a patient at home.
At press time, the car which gave way to the ambulance and one of the motorcyclists have lodged separate police reports.
The ambulance driver, the driver of the car which rammed into the ambulance, as well as the injured motorcyclist, have yet to lodge any report.
The case is investigated under Rule 17 LN167/59 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959. -nst
