Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been urged to declassify the Auditor-General's Report on 1MDB before his meeting with US President Donald Trump next week.
Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said doing so would help dispel speculation that Najib's visit was related to the investigations into the 1MDB funds by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
"If there is nothing to hide, the Umno-BN government must declassify the report on 1MDB before Najib departs for the US.
"If it is not made public, Najib's meeting with Trump will likely be seen as an effort to 'cleanse' the name of 'Malaysian Official 1'," Wan Azizah said in a statement today.
Najib is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Sept 12.
Thus far, Wisma Putra has yet to provide details on the purpose of the visit, although the White House said in a statement that the visit was meant to mark the 60th anniversary of US-Malaysia bilateral ties.
The White House said Trump also looks forward to expanding regional cooperation with "one of America's closest partners in Southeast Asia".
The visit comes at a time when the Federal Investigation Bureau is conducting criminal investigations into 1MDB affairs, while the DOJ is seeking to seize assets allegedly misappropriated from the state investment fund.
Of late, several major US-based news organisations have been highly critical of the White House over the invitation, with The Wall Street Journal urging Trump to rescind the invitation altogether.
1MDB and Putrajaya have maintained that 1MDB funds were not misappropriated, although several jurisdictions across the world have taken punitive actionsagainst bankers for laundering 1MDB-linked funds. - Mkini
