Don't mortgage our economy for Trump photo-op, Azmin tells Najib

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should not mortgage the country's economic well-being just for a photo opportunity with US President Donald Trump, said Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali.
He said Najib's move to invest up to US$24 billion (RM100 billion) to help "strengthen the US economy" was beyond comprehension.
"Utterly shocked Najib wants to 'strengthen' the world's largest economy with up to RM 100 billion of Malaysian money. No photo op worth this much," Azmin tweeted.
Najib met with Trump yesterday, in which both men outlined plans for increased Malaysian investments in the US.
Trump said Malaysia could invest between US$10 billion to US$20 billion in the aviation sector – US$10 billion of which would be purchases of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Airlines Berhad.
Najib, meanwhile, said the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) would invest between US$3 to 4 billion to support US infrastructure development.
"Is the PM telling us that helping the US build infrastructure is more important than helping Sabah and Sarawak build roads and water pipes?" asked Azmin.
"Money held by the EPF is money held in trust for the rakyat and cannot be used indiscriminately," he added.
Azmin said as an emerging economy, Malaysia should be bringing in investments, instead of sending money away.
He cited his own success at securing foreign investments, namely the RM1 billion investment from Ikea to build an Asia-Pacific regional distribution and supply chain centre in Pulau Indah. - Mkini
