KUALA LUMPUR: A 21-year-old man has been remanded for allegedly insulting the late Sultan of Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah on Facebook.
Federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the man was arrested at a house in Genting Highlands at 12.27am today.
Acryl said the man was held under suspicion of uploading an offensive post on the late Tuanku Abdul Halim on Facebook.
“He has been remanded for two days to assist investigation. We have also seized a smartphone and a laptop,” he said in a statement today.
He added that police are tracking another man who is also under suspicion of insulting the late Sultan on Facebook.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network service.
Acryl also urged Malaysians to be responsible internet users by displaying good behaviour and have respect for all.
“Never abuse social media to make any comment which can be viewed as rude or humiliating, particularly against the royal institution or the leaders of the country.
“Such uncivilised acts can spark tension among the public as well as undermine the security and peace of the country,” he said. -nst
