THE PAYOFF? NAJIB APPOINTS EX-IGP KHALID PRASARANA CHAIRMAN & COUNTER-TERROR ENVOY

FORMER inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has been made chairman of Kumpulan Prasarana Malaysia Bhd as well as a special envoy, Bernama reported Prime Minister Najib Razak as saying today.
Najib said Khalid’s appointment as a special envoy was to boost ties in efforts to fight terrorism, extremist ideologies and human trafficking.
“This is in view of his vast experience and the good ties Khalid had fostered with international security agencies as inspector-general of police,” Najib said in a statement.
He said Khalid would also replace Ismail Adam as Prasarana chairman, who stepped down on August 31. Prasarana is a government-owned company set up in September 1998 to manage public transport in Kuala Lumpur.
“Khalid will continue the mission and vision of Prasarana to build and provide a public transport service that is world-class, as well as increasing ridership on public transport.
Najib, on behalf of the government, also expressed his appreciation to Ismail for his service in Prasarana.
Khalid retired from the police force yesterday after 40 years of service.
Former special branch chief, Mohamed Fuzi Harun replaced Khalid as the country’s top cop, while Noor Rashid Ibrahim remains as deputy IGP.
However, Noor Rashid received a promotion in grade, which entitles him to a bigger salary and more benefits.
As IGP, Khalid was known for his extensive use of social media platforms like Twitter to communicate to the public and issue informal warnings, which was criticised by civil rights activists, who accused him of using such platforms to curb free speech.
