PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has questioned the rationale of Malaysia investing in infrastructure in the US while seeking funding from China for developments at home.
This was after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, in his meeting with US president Donald Trump, said Malaysia's Employees Provident Fund (EPF) could invest US$3 billion to US$4 billion in infrastructure projects in the US.
"Why does Malaysia need to help strengthen the US? What impact could we possibly make?
"At the same time, it is strange that we invest in US infrastructure while seeking investments from China for projects in our country," Nik Nazmi said in a statement today.
Najib, in his meeting with Trump, said Malaysia wanted to help in terms of "strengthening the US economy".
Apart from EPF's investments, Najib said Khazanah Nasional Berhad intended to increase its investment in high tech companies, as well as the planned purchase of between 33 to 58 aircraft from Boeing, a deal expected to be worth US$10 billion over five years.
Najib later said he had also raised the plight of the Rohingya with Trump but Nik Nazmi pointed out references to the community facing alleged genocide in Myanmar was absent from the official statement.
Nik Nazmi also questioned Najib staying at the Trump International Hotel in Washington DC during his visit to the US, citing possible conflict of interest. - Mkini
