Zaid: Crooked politicians need counselling, not man in shorts

Former minister Zaid Ibrahim disagrees that a 30-year-old man hauled up for wearing shorts in public requires counselling.
Taking to Twitter, he questioned which legislation the Kelantan religious department is using to subject Wan Khairul Hayee Wali to counselling sessions.
“Wan Khairul does not need counselling...This is not a divorce case,” he said.
On the contrary, Zaid argued that it is corrupt political leaders and government officials who are in need of counselling.
According to reports, Wan Khairul, 30, ran into trouble with religious authorities in Kota Bahru on his way to a futsal match.
The wholesale store employee was approached by an officer when he had stopped to buy a burger for his wife.
"It came as a shock to me when a religious department enforcement officer gave me a notice saying I flouted the Syariah Criminal Enactment for exposing my knees.
"Seriously, they can't expect me to wear a sarong to play futsal," he was quoted as saying.
Should he fail to attend counselling, Wan Khairul would be brought before the Syariah Court where he risked being fined RM1,000.
Meanwhile, MCA central committee member Ti Lian Ker opened fire on the Islamist party PAS, which governs Kelantan, saying its coercion of the indecent attire law is wrecking the foundation of harmony, multiculturalism and spirit of the Federal Constitution.

“There is no element of force or compulsion whereby rights and liberties are granted fair room and space. No one is forced to accept extremist or narrow views. We always take the middle or moderate path.
“This is until PAS enacted laws, by-laws and regulations that are not in the spirit of the Federal Constitution that our nation is founded on.
“This is made worse when extremist views are allowed to prevail whereby politicians speak in the name of God or use religion to forcibly impose their views and will onto others,” he said. - Mkini
