Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has expressed regret that an act done in good faith elicited a sarcastic response.
The premier was talking about visiting PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim in hospital after the latter underwent a shoulder operation.
“He was sick, so I visited him at the hospital on the grounds that we were old acquaintances.
“I was only visiting him, that’s why I brought my wife along. But our sincerity was mocked by a poem,” he told delegates attending Umno’s 71st general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur.
Following the Nov 17 hospital visit, a poem was uploaded on Anwar’s Facebook page which indicated that the battle against BN would continue.
In response, Najib came out with his own poem today.
“We accept the call to continue to fight, so fight like ‘a real man’ in the upcoming general election,” said Najib, who recited his poem to loud cheers from Umno delegates present.
In a statement issued after the visit, Anwar’s son Muhammad Ihsan had thanked Najib and Rosmah for their visit.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison term for sodomy, a charge which he claims was fabricated by the Najib administration.
