KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has set the tone for its 71st annual general assembly, which begins today, by directing its propaganda salvoes at the DAP and its leaders.
A FMT survey found posters featuring the faces of DAP and other Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders adorning a major part of the so-called “Information Corridor” on the second floor of Umno’s headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), the venue of the assembly.
The messages in the posters were not subtle.
One poster portrayed how PH’s main Malay leaders — Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Muhyiddin Yassin, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Mohamad Sabu and Azmin Ali – served as DAP’s jesters.
Others showed how DAP divided Malay leaders and challenged the special privileges of Malays, including a poster of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang being opposed by PH leaders while introducing his private member’s bill to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, popularly known as RUU 355.

The poster carries the message “Pro-DAP Pakatan doesn’t respect religious leader”, “Tony Pua, DAP demands 7% housing discount for Bumiputeras be abolished”, “Islam sidelined in Penang”, “DAP exploiting Malay parties”, “Azmin a DAP clown” and “UTun Mahathir”, a pun on Mahathir’s alleged frequent opinion U-turns.
Also in the exhibition was a picture of Mahathir and Muhyiddin in a boxing bout being witnessed by DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, who is shown with the words “Bagus Melayu screw Melayu” (Good that a Malay screws a Malay).
Besides the anti-opposition posters, the exhibition put up by Umno’s information unit led by its chief Annuar Musa also highlighted the activities of party president and Prime Minister Najib Razak.

A volunteer at the exhibition who spoke to FMT said the Information Corridor was a pioneering effort to show the activities of Umno’s leaders and to expose the lies of the opposition.
“Apart from the posters, we have also prepared videos for showing on gigantic LED screens,” she said, adding that more than 60 secretariat teams comprising student volunteers and Umno information unit staff prepared the exhibition.
She said teams of volunteers were also circulating throughout the PWTC to explain the benefits of supporting Umno and Barisan Nasional.
