UMNO AGM | Pakatan Harapan has promised free education, the abolition of tolls and the goods and services tax (GST), and other goodies it says will counter BN's policies and benefit the people should it capture Putrajaya in the next general election.
However, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said such promises were sweet nothings which, if implemented, would result in two bad realities.
"If the promises are so sweet, they can give you diabetes. There are only two possibilities.
"First, we will have to raise all sorts of taxes, such as those in Scandinavian countries where the people pay an income tax of over 50 percent and over 20 percent for GST.
"Second, our country will go bankrupt because debts are not paid," Khairy (photo) said at the Umno Youth general assembly in the Putra World Trade Centre today.
He also derided other Harapan promises, such as the Selangor government's announcement that it would give a bonus of three months' salary to civil servants in its 2018 Budget.
However, only two-thirds of that bonus has been paid during this year's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Khairy said this showed how Harapan was only giving out false hopes in order to win votes.
He then went on to question whether Harapan could really save RM20 billion by cutting out corruption.
"Is the opposition pact really free from corruption and leakages?" Khairy asked before listing a slew of corruption allegations against the opposition, including Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's bungalow scandal, the Ampang PKR Youth chief's "Disneyland" mansion and many more.
"How are they going to save RM20 billion if even at the state government level there are so many leakages," he added.
