Universiti Malaya's Chinese Language Society (CLS) has again come in the crosshairs of the university over its very public complaint against the Student Affairs Department (HEP) for freezing its activities.
UM CLS president Wong Yan Ke told Malaysiakini that the society was instructed by the university to provide a report on the press conference it organised last Thursday at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
At the press conference, which was conducted in Chinese, the UM CLS leadership had complained about the activity freeze and urged for it to be lifted.
"The university requested for a full report. They asked us to submit the documents which are relevant to the press conference, particularly those we gave to reporters," he said.
According to Wong, UM's HEP asked for the report on the press conference to be delivered to them by 12pm today.
However, he added, UM CLS only received the letter at 8.30am yesterday.
'They didn't give us enough time'
"We thought the request was unreasonable because they didn’t give us enough time to prepare the documents," he said.
Wong said UM CLS has written to the HEP asking for the deadline to be extended to 5pm on Friday.
"We have translated all the information we gave to the reporters. However, before we submit it, we need to check it again to ensure the translation is accurate," he said.
Wong insisted that the university should look into the freezing of UM CLS' activities instead of targeting the society for its press conference.
UM vice-chancellor Rohana Yusof, when contacted for comment, referred questions to the university's communications officer.
Malaysiakini has contacted UM communications officer Tuty Haryati Kassim and is awaiting a response.
On Oct 30, UM CLS received a notice stating that the society would be suspended for one semester.
The suspension will take effect from September 2017 to Feb 20 next year. This also meant the society's annual general meeting on Sept 21 is deemed null and void.
Among the grounds UM CLS was suspended was due to its lack of use of Bahasa Malaysia or English in its posters which served as directions to a music workshop.- Mkini
