Severe punishment for Sabah, S’wak separatists, Zahid warns

Those fanning "Sabah for Sabahans" and "Sarawak for Sarawakians" sentiments will be met with severe punishment, warned Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"The actions of certain quarters inciting the people with these slogans...are against the Federal Constitution.
"We must fight those playing with fire, and who are trying to create anarchy and national instability," Zahid said at the launch of the Umno wings general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur tonight.
He added that such actions were a serious offence which carry serious punishments.

Sabah and Sarawak nationalist sentiments are on the rise, with some fringe groups calling for secession.
In Sarawak, the state government is exerting pressure to gain more autonomy from the federal government.
Meanwhile in Sabah, former Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal is making waves with his new state-based Parti Warisan Sabah.
Zahid said that subversive separatist sentiments were being played by leaders whose politics were bankrupt.
He earlier related how Catalonia's bid to secede from Spain did not receive support from the government in Madrid nor the Spanish royal family.
"The king of Spain (Felipe VI) likened the Catalan separatist leaders as the destroyers of democracy who divided the people of Catalonia," he said.
The Catalan regional government had declared independence in October after a referendum marred by irregularities and interference from Madrid.
However, the federal Spanish government moved quickly to seize control of Catalonia, dissolving the regional government and calling for a snap election.
The leaders of the Catalan independence are currently in prison.- Mkini
