Namewee on world tour, faces KDN troubles at home

Popular singer Namewee's is embarking on his "4896 world tour" concert series, but it looks like Malaysia will not be one of his stops for now.
According to a recently uploaded video clip, Namewee said he and concert organisers had recently applied directly to the Home Ministry for permission to hold the concert.
However, Namewee claimed that Home Ministry officials told him "not to submit" the application.
"Fortunately, they didn't reject me directly. Instead, they ask me not to submit my application
"According to them, there will be something 'big' happening between February and April.
"So it will be (an) inconvenience to hold any concerts (then)," he said.
Namewee alluded that had the application been submitted and rejected, it would cause problems.
"So if I submit my application and they were to reject me, it would be embarrassing. So they said, why not you don't submit the application," he said.

This explanation did not satisfy Namewee, who said several K-pop and Chinese pop stars, such as Jay Chou (photo) and Jackie Cheung will be holding concerts in Malaysia in the coming months.
Namewee said that his concert in Taipei was a roaring success, and he had hoped to be able to bring the show back to Malaysia.
"If any of you want to support Namewee's '4896 world tour', you can head over to the nearest stop - Singapore - on Feb 3. There will be other stops, but it's a lot farther," he said.
Namewee expressed hope that he will be able to perform in Malaysia one day because he has been working hard abroad to promote the country.
"I hope the Malaysian government (will) realise what I did. Please don't judge me with preconceived ideas," he said.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, is a Muar-born 34-year-old singer-songwriter-rapper, who shot to fame in 2007 through his Youtube music videos which contained heavy commentary on Malaysian current affairs.
However, he was arrested multiple times following complaints about his lyrics. He has never been charged.
In recent years, he has been making movies and more music video, garnering a sizeable following regionally and online. Among others, Namewee had collaborated with notable Taiwanese pop-stars Leehom and G.E.M.
His 2013 movie "Banglasia" was banned in Malaysia, and the film premier had to move to Singapore.
The term "4896" is a homonym for a colloquial Hokkien phrase which means "very strong".- Mkini
